Superintendent's Update - August 2017

The start of a new academic year is one of my favorite times to visit our schools and talk with our students, families, teachers and staff. Our hallways are filled with a palpable optimism and drive to continue our momentum toward the highest levels of academic growth and success.

2017 Eclipse Safety and Parent Information

Eclipse Safety Checklist

It’s not the eclipse that is dangerous to observe, it’s the sun! The sun’s visible (and invisible) rays can cause serious damage to the sensitive tissues of the eyes, often without being immediately aware of it. Normally, our common sense protects us from looking directly at the sun for more than a second.

Students Engaged Throughout the Summer

Alpine Elementary was open throughout the summer, hosting children in three separate programs; the SVVSD Summer Literacy Program, STEMapalooza, and Community Schools' Summer Camp. The building supported well over 200 students at different times during the summer. Thanks to amazing Alpine teachers, students in the Literacy Program and STEMapalooza had opportunities to read, write, and solve real-world problems using the design thinking process. In Summer Camp, children attended multiple field trips and engaged in a range of enrichment opportunities.

Kindergarteners Pen Pals with 169th Artillery Brigade

Kindergarteners in Ms. Rachel Etherington's kindergarten class exchanged letters with the 169th Artillery Brigade while they were stationed in the United Arab Emirates. The kindergarteners, led by a child whose father serves in the military, decided to take action to support troops serving overseas. Not only did the students get to exchange letters with their new pen pals, practicing their reading and writing skills, they also learned about American symbols as a part of their Signs and Symbols unit of inquiry.
