Día de los Muertos Alpine Staff Ofrenda

Every year, the Alpine staff remember our loved ones who have passed on by celebrating them in the tradition of Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead).
The solemnity, remembrance, and festive spirit of Día de los Muertos combines ancient cultural roots and present-day popular beliefs that are inscribed in the official List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the UNESCO. As such, it readily fits in with current or upcoming Units of Inquiry.1st Grade’s “Citizens influence their community;” 2nd grade’s, “Individuals actions influence the community,” 3rd Grade’s, “Culture influences identity,” 4th Grade’s “Perspective motivates action,” and 5th grade’s “Humans organize around values.”
It is our hope that by honoring our loved ones, we help to keep alive not only their memories but also the rich tradition that is Día de los Muertos. The ofrenda is open during school hours in Señor Roy’s Spanish classroom until November 16.

Watch Señor Roy’s slide show: “Elements of la Ofrenda” for more about the history and symbolism that goes into the building of our ofrenda.

Watch the film short “Día de los Muertos,” the gold medal winner of the 2013 Student Academy Award.

They will donate 25% of the proceeds from all orders during that window. Note that in order for Alpine to get credit you must mention Alpine at the restaurant or use the code GIVING25 online.
